Regional Economy
The Toowoomba Regional Council (TRC) area extends from the escarpment of the Great Dividing Range in the east to rich pastoral lands in the west and to the north and south. With a diverse economy and in close proximity to Brisbane and the Sunshine and Gold Coasts, it offers the best of urban and rural environments. TRC is part of the South-east Queensland region and is the gateway to the agriculturally-rich Darling Downs and resource rich Surat Basin Energy Precinct. Major enterprises within the TRC area of almost 13,000 square kilometres include manufacturing, retail, community services, education and agriculture. The region supports the junctions of major highways from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Darwin and is a 90-minute drive from the Queensland capital, Brisbane. Toowoomba is the largest city in the TRC area and is the economic, commercial and educational hub of the Darling Downs.
It services a diversity of primary and secondary industries and plays a significant role in the economic development of a large area of southern and south-western Queensland. Almost 160,000 people live within the TRC area. Population projections to 2031 show that the TRC area’s average population growth is expected to increase by 1.7% per annum to a population of approximately 228,461 people. TRC provides nine Service Centres across the region to deliver best practice customer service standards to residents. Service Centres are located at Clifton, Crows Nest, Goombungee, Greenmount, Highfields, Millmerran, Oakey, Pittsworth and Toowoomba. A secure water supply is vital to maintain quality of life of current residents and ensure future development and prosperity. Completion of the Wivenhoe to Cressbrook pipeline, a joint initiative of TRC and the Queensland State Government, in January 2010 secured the region’s water supply for at least the next 40 years.
